Where is the Sandustry log file, and what does the GPU launch option do?

Both facts live inside patch announcements. They are restated here with the developer's own hedges intact.

Quick answer

The developer publishes the log file location in two separate announcements. On Windows it is the game's folder under roaming application data, then logs\main.log. On macOS it is the game's folder under ~/Library/Logs, then main.log. On Linux it is the game's folder under ~/.config, then logs/main.log. The developer also publishes one launch option, --sandustry-no-overlay-gpu-flags, set through the game's Steam properties, and states in the same breath that it will most likely stop the Steam overlay from working while achievements keep working.

Steps

  1. Open the user data folder for your platform: roaming application data on Windows, ~/Library/Logs on macOS, ~/.config on Linux.
  2. Find the game's own folder inside it, then main.log. On Windows and Linux the file sits under a logs subfolder; on macOS it sits directly in the game's folder.
  3. Check both spellings of the folder name. The developer writes it lower case and one Workshop mod writes it capitalised, and on Linux that difference decides whether the path resolves.
  4. To set the launch option, open the game's properties in your Steam library and add --sandustry-no-overlay-gpu-flags to the launch options field.
  5. Expect the Steam overlay to stop working with that option set. The developer states achievements keep working regardless.

Requirements / limits

  • Both facts come from patch announcements rather than the store page or any in-game menu, which is why they are easy to miss.
  • The launch option is offered to affected players with a hedge attached in the same sentence. No source states that it fixes any particular crash.
  • No source states what to do with a log file, whether old logs rotate, or where to send one.
  • The developer describes an opt-in crash reporting path enabled for individual players. No self-service submission route is published.
  • This page carries no hardware, driver or GPU-vendor advice, because no source supplies any.

Common mistakes

  • Looking for the log next to the game's install folder. Every published path is in a user data directory.
  • Reading the launch option as a general performance fix. It is one developer-offered option with a stated side effect.
  • Assuming the overlay caveat means achievements break. The developer states the opposite.
  • Copying a path with the wrong capitalisation on Linux, where the folder's case decides whether it resolves.

Still unverified

  • Is the game's log folder lower case or capitalised on disk? Not verifiedThe developer writes it lower case and one Workshop mod writes it capitalised. No source states the on-disk name.
  • Does the launch option fix any specific crash? Not verifiedThe developer offers it to affected players and attaches a hedge, and never describes it as a fix.
  • How does a player submit a crash report?Developer statementThe developer describes enabling opt-in reporting for individual players. No self-service route is published.
