My filter only builds sideways. How do I make one that blocks material moving up?
The filter you place by default is a conveyor filter. The same building has a wall mode that most players never find because nothing on screen suggests pressing R.
Quick answer
Press R while a filter is on your cursor. The default placement makes conveyor filters that sit in a belt and run horizontally; pressing R switches to wall filters, which you build vertically and which allow or block material passing through them in either direction. Two independent Early Access recordings demonstrate this same switch. R is not filter-specific: launchers cycle through rectangle-up, angled-to-the-side and free-angle line modes, and pumps and liquid vents cycle through single, line and rectangle. The mode name is printed on screen while you drag, so when you suspect a building has another mode, press R and read the label.
Steps
- Select the filter you want, ordinary or advanced, and note that the default drag lays it along a belt.
- Press R. Both recordings call the result a wall filter and build it vertically instead of along the belt line.
- Place the wall filter across the gap that material is travelling through, not on the belt. In one recording it is used to stop residue climbing towards a kinetic press while letting burnt residue continue.
- Set the allow or block rule the same way you would on a conveyor filter. The rule is a property of the filter, not of the placement mode.
- Press R on launchers when a column of them is pointing the wrong way. The cycle is rectangle-up, then all-angled to one side, then a single free-angle line.
- Press R on pumps and liquid vents to move between single, line and rectangle placement instead of building them one at a time.
Requirements / limits
- The wall-filter mode and the launcher cycle are each demonstrated by two independent channels. The pump and liquid vent cycle is demonstrated by both as well.
- One recording states that launchers can be built in every orientation except horizontal. That is a single-source claim and is recorded as one.
- Neither recording states a throughput figure for a wall filter, and one of them observes on camera that a filter can itself become the bottleneck in a shaker line without measuring it. No number is published anywhere, so this page gives none.
- The mode name shown while dragging is the only in-game indication that other modes exist. Nothing in the building's tooltip announces them.
- Foundations also respond to R, switching between line and rectangle. Single source.
- Multi-select on advanced filters — allowing or blocking more than one material with one building — is a separate mechanic covered on its own page, and one recording notes it did not exist in the demo.
Common mistakes
- Stacking a column of ordinary filters to make a vertical barrier. One wall filter does the job; that is what the mode is for.
- Concluding a building has only one placement shape because the first drag produced one. Press R and watch the label.
- Building launchers, seeing them all point up, and demolishing them. The second R mode angles the whole set sideways.
- Placing pumps and liquid vents one at a time. Both have line and rectangle modes.
- Assuming a wall filter is strictly better than a floor filter. One recording explicitly calls it an option rather than an upgrade, and does not claim it performs better.
Still unverified
- Do wall filters and conveyor filters move material at the same rate? Not verifiedNo source measures either. One recording suspects a filter is bottlenecking a shaker line but does not test it, so no comparison is possible.
- Which buildings have build modes, and how many does each have? Not verifiedFilters, launchers, pumps, liquid vents and foundations are demonstrated. One recording says out loud there may be more and that pressing R is how you find out. No published list exists.
- Can a wall filter be placed horizontally?Single unconfirmed reportOne recording says launchers cannot be built horizontally and does not extend the claim to filters. Nothing states the rule for wall filters either way.
